In Memoriam, Professor Jack Reiser Maze (1937–2025)

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing on February 26 of Jack Maze, a longtime friend and advocate of the Arts One Program, as well as a cherished former faculty member. A professor of Botany at UBC beginning in 1967, Jack joined Arts One for the theme, “Nature and Nurture” (1994–1996), and remained an enthusiastic and generous supporter of the program both throughout his career and following his retirement from UBC. Arts One students and colleagues alike still fondly recall Jack’s guided botanical walks on weekend retreats, and he continued to share a love of nature that was scientific and poetic in harmonious measure, whether through his research articles or his publications of haiku. A man of compassion and charity, Jack found lifelong inspiration in Ellie Bondurant—another great friend of Arts One—who he married in 1955, and whose passing from cancer in 2014 he mourned, as he had loved, without end.
