Nick Sousanis to give guest lecture for Seeing & Knowing

One of the authors on the Seeing and Knowing reading list will be giving a guest lecture for that group this upcoming academic year!

Nick Sousanis, the author of Unflattening, will be giving a guest lecture to the Seeing and Knowing group about his work. Unflattening is a PhD thesis in comics form–it makes a philosophical argument for the value of the visual in addition to the verbal in constructing knowledge, and it does so through both words and drawings, just as in a graphic novel.

From the inside cover of Unflattening:

The primacy of words over images has deep roots in Western culture. But what if the two are inextricably linked, equal partners in meaning-making? Written adn drawn entirely as comics, Unflattening is an experiment in visual thinking. Nick Sousanis defies conventional forms of scholarly discourse to offer readers both a stunning work of graphic art and a serious inquiry into the ways humans construct knowledge.

Sousanis’ book fits in well with the theme of Seeing and Knowing, and we’re thrilled he wants to speak to us about it!

There is an excerpt from Unflattening here.
